Summer… what is there not to love about it? We love summer for its uplifting warmth, contagious urge to get outside and enjoy the picturesque outdoors. We love summer for long days when it feels like there is so much we want to do. For the giggles and laughter of kids playing outdoors, riding bikes in the warm summer breeze and splashing in refreshing cold pools. For fresh, juicy produce straight from the farmer’s markets, aromatic outdoor BBQ’s with friends and cozy campfires in the late-night hours.
So much of what we do will somehow revolve around food. Summer brings in a refreshing wave of excitement for fresh food made and eaten outdoors. Did you know, summer could be a time when you and your family could have a great opportunity to eat healthy fresh food? On the flip side, it is actually estimated that kids tend to gain more weight in the summer months due to junk food and hours spent watching movies and playing video games indoors. Going to state fairs, amusement parks and other events can lure people into eating on the go junk food.
This summer, get outdoors and get inspired with fresh food. Visit your local farmers market and make healthy choices about your summer diet. And if you’re in Colorado, anywhere near Boulder, check out the farmer’s market. It has ranked #42 in a list of 101 top farmer’s markets in the US. Here’s a few vendors we enjoyed: Aspen Moon Farm has great produce, they grow a few different varieties of grains also sold as fresh milled flour and make a killer whole-wheat loaf. They also sell one of the best popcorns we have ever tried. The Black Cat has delightful salad greens. Check out the kombucha stand for a refreshing drink. Local honey, mushrooms, breads, pretzels and more… Share with us, what do you love about summer by posting a comment below.
